Tsuchiyu Kokeshi Dolls

Tsuchiyu-Onsen Hot Spring is one of the major homes of Kokeshi dolls in Japan. In the snow-covered land where not many people visited to bathe, Tsuchiyu Kokeshi dolls were made one by one by craftsmen with great care and devotion. The history, culture and people's souls of Tsuchiyu from ancient times are put into each Tsuchiyu Kokeshi doll. Take a good look and feel the mild and gentle warmth of these dolls.

The objectives of this festival are: to be familiar with the "Eight Views of Tsuchiyu ", to be familiar with the waka poems composed in the Edo era, to rediscover the rich nature and culture of Tsuchiyu-Onsen Hot Spring, to promote Tsuchiyu as a healing town, to improve poem composing skills of the people who love poetry, and to provide participants with the opportunity to get acquainted with the people and culture.

Tsuchiyu and Haiku

Haiku was popular nationwide from the end of the Edo era to the beginning of the Meiji era. In Tsuchiyu, haiku was also popular among owners of inns and shops. Since haiku was so popular in Tsuchiyu, haiku poets in Tsuchiyu were called the "Tsuchiyu-ren" group. It is said that they enjoyed composing haiku beside geishas on a boat on the Arakawa River running through the town of Tsuchiyu. In hope of entertaining visitors to Tsuchiyu with Tsuchiyu's haiku culture, Haiku Grand Prix is held in Tsuchiyu.
